School Mental Health Counselor (FT or Contractual)

Department: Human Services

Hours: Primarily Day Shift. Hours may be adjusted in response to student needs.
Sign on Bonus: $5,000.00

Status: Full Time or Contractual Employment Arrangement Available – 40 Hours per week (during School Year) and 24 Hours per week (non-school year). Low census may be utilized in accordance with hospital policy.

Qualifications/Position Requirements:

  1. Master of Social Work (MSW) degree, required.
  2. Current social work license in the State of Michigan, required.
  3. Prior experience in working with adolescents preferred.
  4. Background and training in physical, social and emotional health issues required.
  5. Experience with developing policies and procedures required.
  6. Strong Communication skills, required.
  7. Demonstrates ability to assimilate the totality of the student’s circumstances, medical problems, family support, home environment, finances, etc.
  8. Ability to extract important information and communicate it to others in an educational manner, relative to multiple learning styles.
  9. Demonstrates ability to establish good working relationships and effective communication with peers, patients, families, physicians and all other personnel.
  10. Demonstrates ability to adapt to change and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  11. Ability to handle multiple tasks in a stressful situation while maintaining composure and excellence.

Job summary:

Under Supervision of the School Wellness Program (SWP) Mental Health Supervisor or SWP Coordinator, the School Mental Health Counselor provides mental health services to individuals, families, and groups in the school setting, as well as support and education to school staff around mental health topics. To enhance the educational process of students by maximizing their mental health and well-being, modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning, and promoting an optimal level of wellness.
