Skilled Inpatient Care During Recovery
If you or a loved one has recently undergone a surgical procedure or developed an illness that requires skilled nursing care, you know how stressful the recovery process can seem. At McKenzie Health System, our goal is to try and take some of that stress out of rehabilitation – so all you need to focus on is regaining strength and feeling better.
Our Swing Bed Program acts as the “next step” following a hospital stay, where patients can receive continued care to recover fully before being discharged back home. All patients within this program receive daily made-in-house meals, housekeeping, and treatment services based upon their rehabilitative needs. These services may include, but are not limited to:
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Speech therapy
- IV therapy
- Wound care
- Nutrition services
- Restorative nursing
- Ostomy training
- Diabetic education
- Stroke rehabilitation
- Strengthening therapies for weakness
- Social work services
For more information regarding our Swing Bed Program and how it may meet your rehabilitative needs, contact our McKenzie Swing Bed Coordinator at 810-648-6170.
Who Qualifies for the Swing Bed Program?
Patients who qualify for our Swing Bed Program are those who require extra time to recover from severe illness, injury, stroke, surgery, or other condition. Eligibility requirements include:
- Having stayed in the hospital for three or more days within the past 30 days
- Having met disability or illness requirements for hospital admission
- Being of Medicare age
- Enrollment in Medicare Part A
- Having met criteria for continued care
If you are covered by Medicare, you won’t be charged anything for the first 20 days of your stay in our Swing Bed Program. After the first 20 days, Medicare will pay 80% of costs until day 100. Any additional days must be covered by a supplemental insurance plan or out-of-pocket payments. To learn more about Swing Bed Program eligibility and costs, contact our coordinator.
What Does the Swing Bed Program Allow Rural Hospitals?
As stated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Swing Bed Programs are permitted to rural hospitals through the Social Security Act. This allows rural hospitals to use their beds for rehabilitative purposes by providing either acute or skilled nursing facility care. The purpose of Swing Bed Programs, as illustrated through the Rural Health Information Hub, is to make sure the beds in rural hospitals are getting used and patients are receiving the necessary recovery care.
With the McKenzie Health System Swing Bed Program, you can receive your continued rehabilitative treatments close to home, without being transferred to an urban hospital for tertiary care. For convenience and quality care, our compassionate staff is here to help you recover.
Rehabilitation Services on Your Terms
The 24-hour nursing care we provide through our Swing Bed Program allows patients to recover on their own terms. Rehabilitation is difficult enough on its own, without adding extra stress to it. Receive the tertiary care you need from the convenience of a hospital close to home, before returning back to your daily routine and activities.
