Sandusky, Mich. – Steve Barnett, CEO of McKenzie Health System (MHS), an affiliate of United Healthcare Partners, successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on Friday, November 7, 2014 at Central Michigan University (CMU). This means that as of May 2015, Barnett will graduate with a Doctor of Health Administration degree.
Barnett’s research is titled “Determining the Impact of the Emergency Department (ED) Physician Staffing Model on Core Measure Performance When Treating AMI/CP in a CAH (Acute Myocardial Infarction/Chest Pain in a Critical Access Hospital). His research focused on Physician performance and quality and how the model used at MHS adds value.
CMU’s Doctor of Health Administration (DHA) Program allows healthcare executives and key leadership to focus research on topics that affect their healthcare facilities and communities. DHA students research and write a final dissertation that they “defend” – a process where the student clarifies, validates and demonstrates the significance of their research findings and conclusions.
Barnett enrolled in the program in the Fall of 2009. “I enrolled in the doctoral program because it further challenges me to perform at a very high level. Healthcare delivery is not becoming any easier and being able to influence policy makers is important, this degree helps navigate through that process,” said Barnett.
For Barnett and other full-time employees, MHS offers tuition reimbursement. “Our tuition reimbursement program allows staff to pursue additional education to be the best in their given fields,” said Roger Loding, United Healthcare Partners Board Chairperson. “We’re proud of Steve and our many other employees who balance work, family and school to improve themselves and to help us provide excellent healthcare in the thumb of Michigan.”
