Sandusky, Mich. – The public is invited to attend the June Healthy Lifestyle Workshop, “Good Fats/ Bad Fats (and what does that food label mean anyway?),” being held on Monday, June 29, 2015, at 5:30 p.m. in the McKenzie Health System Dining Room, 120 N. Delaware St., Sandusky. Guest speaker will be Ellynne Volmering, dietician and Weight Watchers’ coach. Due to limited space, pre-registration is encouraged by calling Nina Barnett at 810-648-6127.
“Fats have been getting a bum rap!” exclaims Louise Blasius, Healthy Lifestyle Chairperson. “For many years, we were taught that all fats are unhealthy; but research now shows that not all fats are created equal. Overall, fats are necessary for good health. They help in the storage of many vitamins, healthy skin and hair, and are a dense source of energy. A thin layer of body fat even insulates us from the cold!”
Good Fats, such as those found in olive oil and avocados, have been shown to lower bad cholesterol, while working to increase the amount of good cholesterol in the bloodstream. Bad Fats are saturated fats that are solid at room temperature, such as butter and fat in meat. These fats are bad because they raise total cholesterol while increasing bad cholesterol. And trans fats, which are liquid oils that go through a process to become solid, are very bad fats that work to clog arteries by raising total cholesterol and decreasing good cholesterol.
“Come to the June 29 Healthy Lifestyle Workshop and learn more about all of these types of fats, and also learn how to read food labels,” invites Blasius. “Be an informed consumer; know what’s in the food you buy!”
